Kaitlyn Ryan visited Jefferson City today as part of a Missouri School Boards’ Association event at the Capitol. Ryan, a senior in the culinary arts program at North Point High School, said the program is much more than baking cookies.

Carthage Junior High has been selected as a state winner in Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow STEM Competition. The school is one of 50 schools chosen as state winners in the latest round of the competition. For the competition, Carthage Junior High School’s project is designed to help tackle the state’s drought problems.

The 2023 Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program (MoNASP) state archery tournament was held March 15-17 at the Branson Convention Center and drew more than 5,000 student archers in grades 4-12 from more than 200 schools across the state.

Carthage Junior High School was selected as the Missouri winner of the 13th annual Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest. As a result, the school will receive a $12,000 prize package. Solve for Tomorrow is a national competition that challenges United States public school students in grades 6-12 to explore how the role of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) can play in solving some of the most significant issues in their local communities.

A group of teens in Harrisonville, Missouri, are trying to make the roads a little safer. They're called Team Traction, and they want drivers to buckle up and put their phones down. Harrisonville senior Cort Devenny will do almost anything to show classmates the importance of safe driving. “Our focus is on teens, but everybody can learn,” The club president said.

It was a history-making weekend for Mexico High School. Mrs. Sara Given's, Mexico High School speech team competed in the MSHSAA District 2 Speech and Debate Tournament Friday and Saturday and won 2nd place team sweepstakes for the first time in Mexico's History. The speech team also continued a winning streak of 29 consecutive years of sending students to State.

On February 28, Robinson Elementary School head custodian Bryan Freeman became a hero, but if you ask him, he just did what anyone else would have done. Freeman was watching over students in the school cafeteria when a third-grader started to choke. Without hesitation, Freeman rushed to the student’s aid.

JoJoe’s, the coffee shop inside Joplin High School, has been awarded gold-level certification as a school-based enterprise by DECA. To receive the award, JHS students submitted an application detailing all procedures, training, financial statements and marketing efforts of JoJoe’s, which has operated at the high school for nine years. More than 460 schools received the award this year; the Joplin project was one of 11 awarded in Missouri.

Fox High School will induct three former students and three retired staff members into its newly created hall of fame. The school’s alumni association announced its first group of inductees. A banquet to honor the Fox High School Hall of Fame inductees is scheduled for March 18 in the gym at Fox High in Arnold.

MSBA's Center for Education Safety asked students to enter the 2022 Show-Me I’m Worth Stopping For Contest. Students created videos, audio recordings, and posters educating drivers on the importance of compliance with the school bus stop arm when the bus has stopped. Fort Osage School District students won first-place prizes in both the visual and audio categories.
A Gladstone teacher got a huge surprise recently. Vanessa Thomson, a second-grade teacher at Chapel Hill Elementary in the North Kansas City School District was the recipient of the Milken Educator Award. The honor comes from the Milken Family Foundation and is given to a select group of K-12 educators in the U.S. along with a $25,000 prize. She's the only recipient this year in Missouri.

For the past 33 years, Jo Ann Jones, a longtime bus driver, has been the first Marshfield R-I School District employee children see in the morning and the last one they see in the afternoon. Jones will drive her final route this week, retiring after more than three decades of service to the Marshfield R-I School District.

Joplin High School Junior Aidan Koch has earned a perfect score of 36 on the ACT. Koch has been a student of Joplin Schools since kindergarten. He credits some of his success to extra testing preparation and a positive mental attitude but also recognizes the ongoing support of his educators. “Almost every teacher I’ve had at JHS has taught me something different, and not just in an academic sense but also about life and the way I want to live it,” said Koch.

A Nixa magnet school with 12 tower gardens will be able to add 100 more — plus build a huge greenhouse — after securing a federal grant. Nixa Public Schools announced Monday that the John Thomas School of Discovery was awarded the Urban Agriculture and Innovation Production Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It will include a workspace and enough room for 100 tower gardens — which are sustainable aeroponic growing systems.

Through his nonprofit, The Know Joey? Foundation, Barber Joey Thomas provides hundreds of free haircuts and school supplies to children before they start the year. When Joey Thomas opened 180V Barber Salon, now just off of 18th and Vine, in 2008, he knew he wanted to make an impact on the community.
