On February 28, Robinson Elementary School head custodian Bryan Freeman became a hero, but if you ask him, he just did what anyone else would have done. Freeman was watching over students in the school cafeteria when a third-grader started to choke. Without hesitation, Freeman rushed to the student’s aid.

JoJoe’s, the coffee shop inside Joplin High School, has been awarded gold-level certification as a school-based enterprise by DECA. To receive the award, JHS students submitted an application detailing all procedures, training, financial statements and marketing efforts of JoJoe’s, which has operated at the high school for nine years. More than 460 schools received the award this year; the Joplin project was one of 11 awarded in Missouri.

Fox High School will induct three former students and three retired staff members into its newly created hall of fame. The school’s alumni association announced its first group of inductees. A banquet to honor the Fox High School Hall of Fame inductees is scheduled for March 18 in the gym at Fox High in Arnold.

MSBA's Center for Education Safety asked students to enter the 2022 Show-Me I’m Worth Stopping For Contest. Students created videos, audio recordings, and posters educating drivers on the importance of compliance with the school bus stop arm when the bus has stopped. Fort Osage School District students won first-place prizes in both the visual and audio categories.
A Gladstone teacher got a huge surprise recently. Vanessa Thomson, a second-grade teacher at Chapel Hill Elementary in the North Kansas City School District was the recipient of the Milken Educator Award. The honor comes from the Milken Family Foundation and is given to a select group of K-12 educators in the U.S. along with a $25,000 prize. She's the only recipient this year in Missouri.

For the past 33 years, Jo Ann Jones, a longtime bus driver, has been the first Marshfield R-I School District employee children see in the morning and the last one they see in the afternoon. Jones will drive her final route this week, retiring after more than three decades of service to the Marshfield R-I School District.

Joplin High School Junior Aidan Koch has earned a perfect score of 36 on the ACT. Koch has been a student of Joplin Schools since kindergarten. He credits some of his success to extra testing preparation and a positive mental attitude but also recognizes the ongoing support of his educators. “Almost every teacher I’ve had at JHS has taught me something different, and not just in an academic sense but also about life and the way I want to live it,” said Koch.

A Nixa magnet school with 12 tower gardens will be able to add 100 more — plus build a huge greenhouse — after securing a federal grant. Nixa Public Schools announced Monday that the John Thomas School of Discovery was awarded the Urban Agriculture and Innovation Production Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It will include a workspace and enough room for 100 tower gardens — which are sustainable aeroponic growing systems.

Through his nonprofit, The Know Joey? Foundation, Barber Joey Thomas provides hundreds of free haircuts and school supplies to children before they start the year. When Joey Thomas opened 180V Barber Salon, now just off of 18th and Vine, in 2008, he knew he wanted to make an impact on the community. That year, he began the Fresh Cut Fresh Start program to help the youth in his community look and feel their best.
