Build my Future is an event for high school students in Missouri and surrounding states, where they get hands on learning experiences from the construction industry to see if that is a career path they'd want to take. This year was Build my Future's first year in Bethany and more than 40 area high schools brought more than a thousand high school students to get the opportunity to know what kind of jobs the construction industry is looking for, and to see if anything sticks with them for the future.

For the second year in a row, Kickapoo High School is home to Missouri's state champion marching band. The Kickapoo Golden Arrow Band, under the direction of Aaron Scriven, competed on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the state's Marching Association Championships in Columbia.

The American Heart Association organized its first STEM Goes Red event in mid-Missouri, to encourage eighth grade girls from Boone County to take up careers in STEM. The Royals are playing for a chance to win a championship, but dozens of students already consider the players Classroom Champions. Stars such as Bobby Witt Jr., Vinnie Pasquantino, MJ Melendez, and others serve through the Royals Literacy League Program. From public safety to drought problems, a national science and technology contest is looking for Missouri middle and high school students to participate. Samsung’s “Solve for Tomorrow” STEM Competition includes $2 million in technology and classroom supplies to participating schools. Amara Jackson, this year's National FFA president, is one of six representatives for the organization traveling around the country meeting high school students. The goal of the group's travels is to interact with what they call the "grassroots" of the organization by visiting different communities with FFA programs. A Lee's Summit third grader returned to the classroom this year to a surprise welcome following a 2-year battle with cancer. Lottie, 8, proudly rang her chemo bell leading up to the new school year. A teacher from Conway has been chosen as a finalist for National Civics Teacher of the Year. According to the Bill of Rights Institute (BRI), Christen Wilson is one of 10 finalists competing for the award. Country music legend Dolly Parton is in Missouri today to praise the state working, possibly 9 to 5, to reach statewide distribution of her reading program. Through a cost-share program between the state and Dolly’s foundation, “Imagination Library” provides children up to age five a monthly book free of charge to the children. Twelve-year-old Daken Kramer from Blue Springs will be honored by the Kansas City Chiefs at their final preseason game for raising nearly $7,500 to pay off his classmates' lunch debt. Daken, a sixth-grade student, has received a lot of cheers over the past three months for his fundraising efforts.

St. Joseph School District students will be able to hone their skills in a new facility this school year. The Hillyard Technical Center hosted a ribbon-cutting for its brand-new stimulated manufacturing facility recently. The 22,000-square-foot facility will allow students to cross-train on different aspects of manufacturing to improve their skill levels.
