New Board Members

Missouri law (§ 162.203, RSMo.) requires all school board members to receive 18.5 hours of training within their first 12 months of service. MSBA’s CBM Essential Board Member Training fulfills this requirement and provides the foundation for becoming an effective board member. The training is free for all new board members but registration is required.

New Board Member Training

Make the most of your school board service with MSBA’s Essential Training for new board members.

During the coronavirus restriction, all the training will be delivered online.  After the restrictions are lifted, a portion of the training will be delivered online with the remainder in a one-day classroom setting.

A diverse group of presenters deliver the content based on effective board governance. The required content is addressed and includes sessions on:

  • Student Achievement
  • School Law
  • School Finance
  • Board Policy
  • Board Relations
  • Board Operations
  • Goal Setting/Strategic Planning
  • Advocacy
  • Communications
  • Prevention of Student Sexual Abuse

Registration is required. During the coronavirus restrictions, access to the all online training will be provided within a few days of your registration.  After the restrictions are lifted and classroom sessions resume, board members who register will receive access to the online portion of the training five weeks prior to the classroom training date. Earlier access will be provided upon request. Superintendents are welcome to attend with their new board member(s) as space allows.

Without training [a new board member] might be walking into difficulties without even knowing it. I appreciate the thoughtful guidance you offer and look forward to more education to maximize my contribution to the board.
