New Board Members

Missouri law (§ 162.203, RSMo.) requires all school board members to receive 16 hours of training within their first 12 months of service. MSBA’s CBM Essential Board Member Training fulfills this requirement and provides the foundation for becoming an effective board member. The training is free for all new board members but registration is required.

New Board Member Training

Make the most of your school board service with MSBA’s Essential Training for new board members.

CBM Essential new board member training is delivered in a blended format. Half of the training is provided online through a web-based application. The remainder is provided in a classroom setting at locations around the state. A diverse group of presenters deliver the content based on effective board governance. The required content is addressed and includes sessions on:

  • Student Achievement
  • School Law
  • School Finance
  • Board Policy
  • Board Relations
  • Board Operations
  • Goal Setting/Strategic Planning
  • Advocacy
  • Communications

Registration is required. Registered board members receive access to the online training one month prior to the classroom training date. Earlier access will be provided upon request.

Without training [a new board member] might be walking into difficulties without even knowing it. I appreciate the thoughtful guidance you offer and look forward to more education to maximize my contribution to the board.

– Stacey Albin-Wilson, Board Member, Ritenour
