State statute requires school board members to approve all employment contracts, which are distributed in the spring, no later than May 15th.  But many Board members approve the names and salaries and have never actually seen the contract language.  It is important for Board members to understand what they are committing the district to do.  Board members are not expected to draft or rewrite these employment contract, but they should make sure that the language is current and that the district’s contracts are regularly reviewed by the district’s attorney.  The district can avoid many employment disputes with a well-written contract.  MSBA provides sample contracts for districts to consider at https://www.mosba.org/school-personnel.
